Terrain: elevation and slope
The relief under a measurement that has no elevation of its own.
What it computes
Terrain reads a terrain model under a measurement that has no elevation (drawn on the map, for instance): the elevation of each corner, the average and steepest slope, the true surface area of a sloping plot next to its map area, and the profile of a line with its climb and descent.
Where
On the map, Terrain in the Use this measurement group of the tools; on a saved measurement, Calculate terrain. A walk with its own GPS elevation already has its profile.
Its limits
Its grid is 3 to 5 m at best, often coarser — the size is written under the result: right for the slope of a field, not for a garden. Slopes are read over sections of at least 30 m, so one wrong value cannot make a cliff.
It needs a connection, only when you tap, and downloads only the tiles that cover the measurement, never your position. A measurement too large for the model is refused. Results are not stored: computing again reuses the tiles already downloaded.
